Team Hattersley Run the Golden Mile

On Sunday 11th May 2008 a team from The Gym competed in the Blackpool 10k Fun Run. This was the first time gym members have taken on a 10k challenge. The race took runners from the Hilton Hotel, along the promenade, past the Pleasure Beach and back again, and we were delighted when all team members completed the course. First home for The Gym was Len Walters closely followed by Marie Murhpy. The team was well supported by family and friends who soaked up the beautiful sunshine with minimum effort! Unlike the runners who were hot and sweaty and grateful for the much needed refreshments afterwards provided by Carlos Tait, Hattersley Neighbourhood Partnership's Commmunity Health Worker.

Local Residents Get The Knowledge

Four Season Games – Basketball event

The Four Seasons Games which is competed for by four primary schools Pinfold, Arundale, Broadbottom and St James continued on Tuesday 18th March with the Basketball event.

Another closely contested tournament with thrills and spills aplenty seen Arundale lift their third straight Four Seasons Games Basketball title.

Still with crucial overall league points at stake St James and Pinfold battled hard for the runners up spot, St James not only taking second place but also demonstrating some excellent skills which earned Clara Walker the ‘Player of the Tournament’.

Well done to all the schools that competed and special thanks to their teachers for once again helping to coordinate the event.  As you can see (below), after 3 events it is still very close and with two competitions remaining (Cross-Country and Cricket) the FSG title is still far from being decided.

February Half Term Sports Camps

Over 40 children turned out to be part of Hattersley’s Sport in the Community half term activities.  Running from the Longdendale Recreation Centre 11:30-1:00 and the Ken Ward Sports Centre 1:30-3:00 they participated in different activities from Table Tennis to Tag, from Dodge ball to Basketball.

Friday saw 21 of the children who had been attending the sports camps go on a trip to the National Football Museum in Preston.  There they experienced many activities and got a taste for football from, back in the day, actually dressing up in old football kits.  The highlight being the interactive penalty shootout with a computer generated goalkeeper.

All had an excellent week and we now look forward to our Easter break activities.

Four Seasons games – Table Tennis

Tuesday 5th February 2008 was the turn of the Table Tennis event of the Four Seasons Games, held at the Longdendale Recreation Centre.

Starting of with some friendly games the players soon got into the swing of things warming them up nicely for the tournament.

St James who won the tournament last year and also got to keep a Table tennis table for the whole year at their school showed the benefits of being last year’s winners, they had obviously been practicing.

Not to be out done participants from Pinfold fought hard and played well to give them some tough and very entertaining matches, particularly in the Year 4 age group between Jack Tougher (pinfold) and Bartosc Blachut (St James) as it went to a very close decider.

St James proved though that practice does make perfect and served up some delightful Table tennis to regain their crown as Four Seasons Games Table Tennis champions.

Sport in the Community would like to congratulate all those who took part in the event and look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday 18th March at the Longdendale Recreation centre for the Basketball event.

Trials at Man City for 3 of Hattersley's rising stars

Three of Hattersley FC’s under 8’s team have been invited to go down to Manchester City FC’s football academy which is at Failsworth High School for trials. Players Jacob Coyne, Zac Woodcock and Luke Power were all spotted whilst playing for the Under 8’s at St Georges playing fields in Ashton.

The lads joined the under 8’s after taking part in Hattersley’s Soccer Skool and, although they should all be playing for an under 7’s team, they have been chosen to play for the under 8’s as Hattersley does not currently have an under 7’s team.

Hattersley’s Soccer Skool is now looking for new talent for next year’s under 8’s team, so if your son or daughter are interested in playing football and want to follow in the footsteps of Jacob, Zac and Luke,  please bring them down to the Soccer Skool,

Soccer Skool takes place at the Ken Ward Sports Centre on Monday’s, 4pm -5pm and is run by qualified coaches, who hold child protection and 1st aid certificates. The cost is only £1.50 per session.

For more details contact Paul Willis at the Ken Ward Sports Centre on 0161 366 5545 or email paul.willis@hnp.org.uk.

Active Hattersley Community Sports Club

The volunteer led sports club was formed in 2001 to help Community groups and Individuals form and develop sport and leisure clubs.  It has helped with many sporting initiatives on and off the estate and has seen many successes.

·         Nominated for Tameside club of the year 2005.

·         Neil Lonergan, nominated for volunteer of the year 2005

·         Kerry Scott and Brian Foulds nominated for unsung hero 2005 (all members of AHCSC).

One of the many clubs active Hattersley have helped to develop is Hattersley Football Club, (Tameside’s club of the year 2004).  Due to the recent ‘busy period’ i.e. building of the KWSC, Active Hattersley had gone dormant.  However, with it’s recent revival starting of with an AGM and an election of both old and new members Active Hattersley look set to continue and with ‘phase II’ of the KWSC looming ever closer it couldn’t be a better time.

Summer Sports Bonanza

Hattersley’s popular Summer Sports Camp returned for the fifth year running and once again proved a massive success.

Held at the Ken Ward Sports Centre, the scheme saw over 80 children taking part in various sporting activities such as Handball, Softball, Uni-Hockey, Football, Rugby and Kwik cricket along with various other games and activities.

The Ken Wards Sports Centre provided excellent facilities for the Summer Sports Camp and hopefully, with phase II on the horizon, there would be even more on offer to kids in the future.

Each Friday saw a group of 12-15 young people take trips to various venues such as Playgolf and Sale Water Park and enjoy a range of activities such as swimming, golf and go-Karting.

In a questionnaire, when asked what changes they would make for next year, one parent replied;

“Nothing, fantastic value for money and a brilliant way to occupy kids in the holidays.  Plus, all kids need to do more sport, well done!”

                                                (Anonymous Parent, August ‘07)

The finale to the camps ended with a presentation of various awards from ‘Singer of the Summer’ to ‘Top Sports Performer’, with the main highlight going to local youngster Kane Howe who fell of his bike just as he was to be announced ‘Joker of the Summer’ – what timing!

Jeff Hynds, from Hattersley’s Sport in the Community Team, said, “We would like to thank all the young people for taking part and making the Summer Camp great for our team as well as the kids. We hope to see them all again over the half term holidays”.

If you require any information about the Summer Sports Camp, or any future sports activity in Hattersley, please contact Jeff on 0161 368 2096.

A presentation marking the completion of the certificate was held at the Children and Young Peoples theme group meeting.  Cheryl Eastwood, Chair of the group along with Jean Davidson, Resident Co-Chair presented the young people with the certificate and a sports voucher.

A parent of one of the pupils, Colin Cilgram said “The certificate has provided my son with the opportunity to mature and gain confidence.  I have seen an improvement in his attitude to everyone and he has since gained employment as a football coach.  I can only put this down to this course”.

Steve Alford, Sports Manager said “This is the 3rd year the certificate has been running and we will continue to deliver the next one in September 2007.  These pupils have been a credit to the Sport in the Community project and the feedback I have had from all the staff and volunteers that have been involved has been very positive.  I would like to wish all of them every success in the future in whatever they do”.

If you would like to know more about this opportunity and you are a Year 11 pupil, contact us on 0161 366 5611.

Michael said "when my Dad told me about the award, I was totally shocked and couldn’t think of anything to say. I feel really proud and have to thank my Dad for all his help and coaching”

This is the latest in a long list of recent successes for Hattersley footballers with Hattersley FC previously being awarded the Cheshire FA’s Charter Standard Club of the Year award and Tameside’s Sports Club of the Year in February 2006.

Local youngsters Robert Lanigan and Cian Lennie, both from Hattersley’s Dance Troupe, performed a wonderful dance routine in the opening ceremony for the games.  Local girl Lisa Such who runs and coordinates the dance troupe at the Longdendale Centre on Wednesday evenings choreographed the dance.  Lisa also managed the cheerleading team none of whom had done it before but came very credible runners up in their category.

Minister for Sport, Gerry Sutcliffe said: “StreetGames is a fantastic programme that offers young people from disadvantaged areas the chance to do more sport – such as football, athletics and basketball – and lead a more active lifestyle. The health benefits are obvious but StreetGames does more than that. It also builds stronger communities and helps young people fulfil their potential through volunteering and coaching opportunities.”

A guest team of sixty young people from the London Borough of Newham, home to London’s Olympic Park in Stratford also attended the event. The youngsters got to see first hand some of the benefits that the hosting of major sporting events can bring and what they might expect following the 2012 Olympics.

The Leisure Team at Hattersley Neighbourhood Partnership would like to extend it’s thanks to all the participants and volunteers for their time, effort and excellent contributions to making it a fantastic day and doing not only themselves but the whole community proud.
